Should I get dressed on days I work from home?
Question:
Should I get dressed on days I work from home?
Answer:
It really depends on the nature of your job, but generally, yes. At the very least from the waist up.
Explanation:
Many people think a key benefit of remote work is not having to spend time getting ready or just working in comfortable clothes. There are studies that show, however, that preparing for the day by putting on a clean pair of (non-pajama) clothes and making yourself presentable does make you more productive. Additionally, there is always the off-chance that you’ll get pulled into an unexpected meeting or, unrelated to work, have to leave the house. So, yes, it’s probably a good idea to get dressed and put in a modicum of effort to look…put together.
There are some remote jobs, especially freelance ones, where meetings simply don’t happen (or off-camera is the norm). Those kinds of remote jobs give you more flexibility to work in your PJs, although the productivity boost from “real” clothes still applies.
There are a lot of benefits to remote work, but not showering or changing out of your sleepwear probably shouldn’t be one of them.
